Men's Hockey Snaps Six Game Skid in Comeback Overtime Win

Oxford, OH—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey played in their third game in six days and defeated Miami (OH) in overtime 5-4.

How it Happened

The opening frame consisted of the Redhawks getting back-to-back goals just under three minutes apart.

Just a minute after the second Miami goal, Noah Kane cleaned up the rebound in front of the Redhawk net for his fourth goal of the season. Dalton Hunter took the breakout pass and drove to the front of the net and threw it to the slot. Marko Reifenberger had his shot blocked but Kane found it and put it in the top corner of the net.

After the opening frame Miami was up 2-1 but Mercyhurst was outshooting the Redhawks 17-10.

The two teams played back and forth hockey to start the middle frame.

At the 13:49 mark of the second period, Pierce Crawford won a faceoff in the Miami zone and Dante Sheriff ripped a shot over the top shoulder of the netminder to make it 2-2.

Miami responded at 17:05 mark to take the lead back.

Just passed the halfway mark of the third period, Miami extended their lead to 4-2.

At the 2:34 mark of the third period, Crawford took a shot from the bottom of the circle that was originally called no goal. At the next whistle the play was reviewed and was called a goal. Kane and Owen Norton picked up assists.

With the net still empty, Cade Townend took a shot through traffic that found the back of the net to tie the game at four with just under two minutes remaining.

The game went to overtime and each team had chances to win it. Hank Johnson made a huge save sliding across to keep the game alive.

The next play resulted in the game winner. Rylee St. Onge took the pass from Kane and deked the goal to win the game for Mercyhurst.

The Lakers outshot Miami 42-29 and Johnson made 25 saves in the win.

Battle of Special Teams

The Lakers were 0-2 on the power play while Miami scored once on four attempts.
