STATE COLLEGE, Pa – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team completed their two game series at Penn State on Saturday afternoon falling by a 3-1 margin to the host Nittany Lions. The Lakers currently sit in third in the College Hockey America standings with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was the Nittany Lions (14-8-3, 7-2-1 CHA) who struck first courtesy of Mallory Uihlein. The defenseman wound up a shot from close to the blueline that found the back of the net to put the Nittany Lions up 1-0 with 8:44 remaining in the first period. The Lakers (16-9-2, 6-4 CHA) were limited to just five shots in the period, none of them going in.
As the game advanced into the second period, Penn State continued to be aggressive on offense. Uihlein scored her second goal of the contest nine minutes and 26 seconds into the second period to put her team up 2-0, Penn State scored again just a minute later when Amy Dobson put one home to extend the Nittany Lions lead to three.
The Lakers had chances in the period, going on the power play on three different occasions, however none of them proved to be successful chances.
The Lakers earned two additional power plays in the final period, the second of the two resulted in a two man-up advantage as Coach Mike Sisti optioned to pull his goalie to give Mercyhurst the 6v4 for two minutes. The move would pay off as freshman Mariella Parks put home her seventh score of the season making the score 3-1 Penn State.
Unfortunately for the Lakers, that was the last of the scoring in the contest as they went on to drop their second game in a row for only the second time all season. The team will move on from Penn State and turn their attention to RIT, who they are slated to host at the Mercyhurst Ice Center next weekend.
