Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Basketball team is poised to continue their streak of short turnarounds as they look to rebound from Monday's loss with a road tilt at Edinboro Wednesday at 5:30 and a home matchup with California (Pa.) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
The Matchups
Edinboro is 49-11 all-time against the Lakers since they first met in 1974. The Fighting Scots swept the 2019-20 season series with a 78-61 win in Erie on Jan. 29 and a 75-59 win in Edinboro on Feb. 22.
Mercyhurst won their first meeting in 2019-20 against California on Jan. 25, but the Vulcans evened the series in the Lakers' final home game of the season Feb. 26. That gave Cal a 29-11 all-time record against the Lakers dating back to 1985.
Shopene Drops 20
Redshirt senior Emily Shopene put up 20 points in Monday's losing effort at Seton Hill. She nearly made it a double-double with nine rebounds. The Erie product is up to 890 career points as she chases down the 1,000-point milestone.
Back on the Court Again
After beginning the season sidelined with an injury, Nicolette Arnold made her season debut Saturday at Kutztown with 14 points and five rebounds over 23 minutes. On Monday, she scored nine points and pulled down four boards in 18 minutes of action.
Laker Radio
On Thursday, the Mercyhurst Athletic Department announced the expansion of the Mercyhurst Sports Network to provide live audio broadcasts of select road Mercyhurst games. The first broadcast will allow fans to follow along from home or on the go as the Lakers head to Edinboro Wednesday. Both the men's and women's games will be covered by Jack Angelucci and Connor Piecuch with coverage starting at 5:20 p.m. Both games will be available to stream at https://mixlr.com/mercyhurst-athletics.
Scouting the Fighting Scots
Edinboro is 6-4 overall and 4-3 in PSAC play following their Monday afternoon loss to Pitt-Johnstown. The Fighting Scots swept the PSAC West's weekly awards, with Rana Elhusseini earning Athlete of the Week and Bella Burrelli earning Defensive Player of the Week. Hayley Sims (15 points), Gillian Fisher (11.6) and Elhusseini (10.2) are averaging double-digits in points while Burrelli is averaging 10.2 rebounds per game.
Scouting the Vulcans
Cal enters the week with an 8-2 overall record and 3-2 PSAC record. The Vulcans will head to Erie Saturday after visiting Clarion Wednesday evening. Saturday will be the Vulcans' third time playing on Owen McCormick Court this season, as they took part in the PSAC vs. MEC Challenge hosted by Mercyhurst Nov. 13-14 but did not play the Lakers. Dejah Terrell leads Cal with 19 points and eight rebounds per game.
