Erie, PA—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team played their home opener against Edinboro on Wednesday afternoon. The Lakers made a late charge but ultimately fell by a score of 2-1 to the Fighting Scots.
How it Happened
The two teams were back and forth for the first ten minutes of the match. Edinboro drew a foul in the 15th minute that gave them a penalty kick. The Fighting Scots converted on the penalty kick to make it 1-0 in the 15th minute.
The Lakers generated 11 shots, three on target in the first half, however they couldn't get one past the keeper, Mercyhurst went into the break down one.
Similar to the first half, the Lakers controlled possession but could not put the ball in the back of the net. Edinboro extended their lead to two in the 75th minute to put the Lakers in a deeper hole.
Mercyhurst finally got one past the keeper in the 89th minute. Amata Valentini headed one home after Madison Hoover crossed the ball in off a free kick from just outside the box.
The Lakers hustled back to midfield to try and even the score but were unsuccessful.

Mercyhurst drew 10 corners including six in the first half, while they gave Edinboro only two. The Lakers controlled play throughout the game as they controlled the ball 62 percent of the time. Mercyhurst generated 19 total shots with nine finding the target. Maddie Elbro made her second straight start and made four saves in net.
