Box Score Elkins, W. Va.—662 days after their last championship season game, the Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team won their season opener Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-1 over Davis & Elkins.
How it Happened
Mercyhurst struck first just four minutes into the game as Karah Van Horn took a shot that got past the Davis & Elkins keeper to give the Lakers the early 1-0 lead.
After back-and-forth play from the two teams and not many chances for either teams, Maddie Elbro made an amazing save as she dove to her left to punch the ball away to keep the Laker lead at one.
At the half the Lakers held the 1-0 lead. Just five minutes into the second half the Senators took advantage of a corner kick to tie the game at one.
In the 61st minute, Van Horn struck once again. Fellow freshman Teagan Mehalko created an opportunity and Van Horn followed it and netted her second goal of the game.
The Laker defense held up as the Senators started to put the pressure on. Mercyhurst held off the Senator pressure to hold on to the win.
Coach's Corner
Head Coach Jon Arlet was proud of his young team. "I'm proud of the team on their first time out with so many new faces and nearly two years removed from our last season. There was a competitive spirit and I'm especially proud of the sideline support the entire match." Arlet was excited to see his young goalkeeper and forward succeed in their first regular season match. "Maddie (Elbro) saved us in a big way today at moments and she deserves a lot of credit. Not to mention Karah continuing to find the back of the net. That being said- it took everyone today. Lot of lessons and we will be better for making the trip to West Virginia. "
