ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst football team held the ball for over 43 minutes as the Lakers topped the Battlers 18-3 Saturday night at Saxon Stadium.
The Mercyhurst defense held the Battlers to just 86 total yards and seven first downs. Bradley Burrows notched 10 tackles including four sacks. Thomas Zacharyasz finished the game with five stops while Ryan Funa, Jacob Holl and Jehrod Gregory each finished with four.
After a scoreless first quarter, Mercyhurst got on the scoreboard first when Burrows forced an intentional grounding call on Jaylen McNair with 7:19 on the clock in the second quarter.
Brian Alsobrooks connected on two field goals in the final two minutes of the half to send the Lakers into the locker room up 8-0.
Mercyhurst extended its lead on the opening drive of the second half. Michael Lowery was 5-for-5 for 39 yards including a three-yard touchdown to Sean Banas. The Alsobrooks extra point made it 15-0 Lakers.
Alderson Broaddus got on the board with 5:48 left in the third on an Austin Hampton 25-yard field goal.
Alsobrooks set the final with his third field goal of the game with 7:20 to play.
Lowery finished the game 24-of-36 for 274 and a touchdown. Rylan Davison hauled in seven catches for 96 yards. Jason Armstrong added five catches for 55 yards.
Ayron Rodriguez led the Lakers with 58 yards rushing on 13 carries. Dustin Shoaf added 42 yards on 14 carries.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday when they host West Chester at Saxon Stadium at 12 p.m.
