ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst football team built an early lead, but West Chester scored 28 straight second quarter points and earn a 56-10 victory Saturday afternoon at Saxon Stadium.
The Laker defense set up the first score of the game. On a third and five for the Golden Rams, Ryan Funa stepped in front of a Desman Johnson pass and returned it to the West Chester 3-yard line. On the ensuing third and goal Michael Lowery found Jason Armstrong for the 11-yard touchdown.
Phil Poquie evened the game, 7-7, with a three-yard run with 13:06 left in the second quarter. Shane Dooley connected with Rasheem James for a 67-yard touchdown to take a 14-7 lead.
West Chester would score twice more in the final two minutes of the second quarter to puch the lead to 28-7.
Mercyhurst trimmed the lead before the half going 62 yards in seven plays capped by a Brian Alsobrooks 30-yard field goal to make it 28-10 at the break.
The Golden Rams shutout the Lakers 28-0 in the second half to set the final.
Lowery finished the game 14-of-23 for 105 yards and a touchdown. Chawntez Moss led the Lakers with 39 yards rushing.
Jacob Holl paced the Lakers with eight tackles, two for loss. Thomas Zacharyaz and Ryan Funa each chipped in seven stops.
The Laker will make their first road trip of the season next Saturday when they go to East Stroudsburg for a 3 p.m. kick.
