Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team competed their weekend sweep of RPI on Saturday. Mercyhurst shutout the Engineers 2-0.
How it Happened
Despite playing into overtime last night both teams came out full of energy. RPI generated 12 shots in the first, Mercyhurst put eight shots on net in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second the Lakers dominated play outshooting the Engineers 10-1. The Lakers lit the lamp twice in the middle frame.
Alexa Vasko tallied her first goal of the season on the powerplay at the 5:42 mark. Jordan Mortlock took a pass from Vanessa Upson at the point, Mortlock took a shot and Vasko was at the top of the crease to bang the rebound in.
Exactly five minutes later at the 10:42 mark Marielle Parks made it 2-0. The Lakers caught RPI running around in their own zone, Sydney Pedersen kept the puck in, she gave a quick pass to Vasko and Parks did the rest taking it to the middle and putting a wicked wrister past the goalie.
Mercyhurst went into the final frame outshooting RPI 18-13.
In the third the Lakers limited RPI's scoring chances even towards the end when it was a 6-4 situation. RPI played with an empty net for 1:22 and the Lakers held off the charge.
Jenna Silvonen made her second start of the year and picked up win number two and her fourth career shutout.
