Women's Hockey Defeats RPI in Overtime

Erie, Pa.—Mercyhurst Women's Hockey notched their second win of the season of Friday night. Just like the season opener the Lakers had to come from behind. Mercyhurst engineered a comeback against RPI to win 2-1 in overtime.

How it Happened

The first period consisted of back-and-forth play from both teams with neither squad generating many great opportunities. After one the Engineers were outshooting the Lakers 11-4.

At the 13:18 mark of the second period RPI scored the first goal of the game. Neither team would score in the rest of the middle frame.  Mercyhurst outshot the Engineers 11-7 in the second period.

Mercyhurst came out firing in the third period as Emily Pinto scored her first goal of the season to tie the game at one. Sarah Nelles picked up the lone assist for her first point of the season.

After 60 minutes the two teams were tied and headed for overtime. In the third period, Mercyhurst outshot RPI 22-2.

Just 56 seconds into the overtime session, freshman Vanessa Upson called game. Alexa Vasko kicked the puck out of a scrum behind the Laker goal. Fellow captain K.K. Thiessen held the puck behind the net to allow Vasko to change. Thiessen made a long stretch pass to Upson and Upson did the rest. We'll let the video speak for itself.

Ena Nystrøm made her first start of the season. Nystrøm made 19 saves in the win against her former team.

Coming From Behind

For the second straight game the Lakers had to mount to comeback to earn a victory. Last Sunday against RIT the Lakers fell into a 2-0 hole and won by a final score of 6-3. Mercyhurst was 2-4-1 last season after giving up the first goal, this season the Lakers are already 2-0-0.
