Williamsville, N.Y.—The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team made the trip up to Buffalo for an early match against the Daemen Wildcats. Despite the early kickoff the Lakers won 4-1.
How it Happened
In the 13th minute the Wildcats drew a penalty kick and made no mistake to make the game 1-0 and give Daemen an early lead.
After that it was all Mercyhurst, before the first half ended the Nic Münch tied the game in the 37th minute.
At halftime the two teams went to the locker rooms tied with the Lakers outshooting the Wildcats 8-6.
The Lakers took control of the game in the second half. Dylan Sumner notched his fourth goal of the season to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. Julius Becker notched the lone assist after playing the ball into the box.
Just over 10 minutes later in the 74th minute the Lakers extended their lead. Sumner played a ball over the top to Nevado Elliott who made a quick pass to Sidney Warden who had an open net and scored his second goal of the year. The Lakers led 3-1 with just over 15 minutes remaining in the match.
Warden struck again in the 81st minute. Goalkeeper Jonathan Gomes played the ball up the field and Elliott was able to get his head on it and put it in open space just left of the box. Warden beat the keeper and every defender to the ball and chipped it over the keeper to make it 4-1.
By the Numbers
The Lakers outshot the Wildcats 15-9 overall and 9-3 on shots on goal. Mercyhurst drew 10 corners while allowing just one to Daemen. Gomes needed to record just two saves to earn his fourth win of the season.
