Men's Soccer Falls to West Liberty in Home Opener

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team played its first game since 2019 and fell by a score of 3-1 to the Hilltoppers of West Liberty this afternoon. Sidney Warden scored the lone goal for the Lakers.

How it Happened

Mercyhurst was quick off right off the bat as Warden had the first shot of the game just 39 seconds into the game. The shot was turned away by the West Liberty keeper.

The Hilltoppers took the lead in the ninth minute as the ball found the twine off a corner kick that bounced off a West Liberty body and over the line.

West Liberty extended its lead in the 35th minute. After a long lob pass into the box the West Liberty forward headed it over Mercyhurst goalkeeper Jonathan Gomes to make the Hilltopper lead two.

Right before the half time horn, the Hilltoppers scored off another corner kick that bounced off Gomes' hands and into the net. The Lakers went into the half down 3-0, despite having five shots.

Sean Kerrigan drew a foul inside of the box in the 55th minute of the match, giving the Lakers a penalty kick. Warden placed the ball on the spot and made no mistake putting it past the diving keeper.

Despite keeping the Hilltoppers off the board in the second half the Lakers were unable to complete the comeback. Mercyhurst tallied 14 shots and five shots on goal.
