Volleyball Drops Two Five Set Matches on Saturday

The Mercyhurst University Volleyball team dropped a pair of five set matches on Saturday. The Lakers played host to Davis & Elkins College and Shepherd University.

The Lakers fell in the opener against Davis & Elkins 3-2. After surrendering the first two sets against the Senators, Mercyhurst stormed back, winning the third set 25-12 and the fourth 25-20. D&E took the final set 15-13.

Beth Brady (22), Madison Kasper (14), and Hailey Wilson (11) led the Lakers in kills for game one. Maggie Thomas was a force at the net, where she posted a career high five blocks.

Against Shepherd, the Rams took the opening set 25-21. The Lakers captured the second set 25-23. After dropping the third set 25-9, Mercyhurst responded as they took a hard-fought fourth set 27-25.

In the fifth set, the Lakers started to mount a comeback after falling behind 14-8. Mercyhurst would score four straight points, however their comeback came up just short as they saw Shepherd take the fifth set, 15-12.

Offensively in game 2, Kasper led in kills with 15. Brady posted another 10 and redshirt senior Chase Cole posted 10 herself.

Isa McCaffrey and Hannah Vuylsteke each posted 19 digs to lead the defensive effort for Mercyhurst.

Zoe Gadomski had herself a day from the serving line. The senior from Avon, Ohio was credited with eight aces during game 2.

The Lakers are back in action on Friday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center on Homecoming Weekend. They will welcome Slippery Rock, first set is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
