Erie, Pa -- The Mercyhurst University Volleyball team opened up play at the newly renovated Mercyhurst Athletic Center in grand style Friday evening. The Lakers swept the visiting West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats 3-0.
Mercyhurst was locked in from the start of the match till the end. They began with a 25-15 opening set win. The Lakers posted a .520 hitting percentage as a team in the first set.Â
The second set was similar to the first as Mercyhurst breezed by the Bobcats 25-18.
In the third set things started to click for West Virginia Wesleyan. The Bobcats led at one point 17-15. Mercyhurst then reeled off four straight points to take control of the set. Mercyhurst would ultimately take the third 25-22.
Beth Brady paced the Mercyhurst attack with 12 kills.
Hailey Wilson added seven and
Madison Kasper tallied six.
Defensively for the Lakers,
Maggie Thomas and Kasper eached blocked two shots a piece. Brady recorded seven digs to pace Mercyhurst, senior libero
Hannah Vuylsteke added six.
Mercyhurst is slated to continue play at the MAC tomorrow as they face off against Davis & Elkins College at 10:05 a.m. After a neutral site game, Mercyhurst will follow with a matchup vs. Shepherd at 3:05 p.m.
