Erie, PA—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team traveled down State Street to take on the Gannon Golden Knights in their first of two matches this season. The Lakers and Golden Knights couldn't solve each other and the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
How it Happened
Both teams struggled to generate many quality scoring chances throughout the first half. In the first 45 minutes Gannon had seven shots with three finding the goal. Mercyhurst generated just one shot which was off target. Goalkeeper Maddie Elbro made three saves to keep the game scoreless after the first half.
In the second half, the game opened up for both teams. The best chance came from the Lakers in the 69th minute. Karah Van Horn took a centering pass from just outside the box. The keeper charged Van Horn and Van Horn took a shot, it was saved but not held by the Gannon keeper. Van Horn collected the rebound and took a shot from just inside the box, the ball floated towards the goal and hit the top of the crossbar but didn't cross the line.
With just 10 seconds left in regulation Van Horn had one more opportunity but the keep stopped it, after 90 minutes the two teams solved nothing and went to overtime.
In the second half, the Lakers generated 10 shots, four on goal. Gannon took six, Elbro saved all five that were on goal.
The first overtime period ended, and nothing had changed, the teams prepared for another 10-minute period.
In the 105th minute, Emily Mijares had the opportunity to win the game as she beat the Gannon defender. Mijares took the shot high and to the short side, but the Gannon keeper got a finger on it to tip it over the bar. On the ensuing corner kick the goalie had to punch away the corner to keep it out of the goal.
Neither team could break the draw and after 110 minutes the game ended in a 0-0 tie.
