Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Dan Richeal, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications

For the First Time Since 2009, Women's Soccer Defeats Slippery Rock

Slippery Rock, PA—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team traveled to Slippery Rock on Saturday seeking their first win over The Rock since 2009. Thanks to an early Laker goal, Mercyhurst won 1-0 to end the winless streak against Slippery Rock.

How it Happened

In the 18th minute the Lakers struck first, Emily Mijares took a shot from just inside the box. The shot deflected off the foot of a Slippery Rock defender and snuck past the goalie to give the Lakers the lead.

The Lakers shutdown The Rock and allowed a limited amount of quality scoring opportunities after taking the lead. The Rock had just four shots, three on goal in the first half. Mercyhurst generated just two shots in the first 45.

In the second half, Slippery Rock turned up the pressure, but the Lakers stood tall and held on to the lead. Maddie Elbro followed up her 10 save performance against Gannon with a nine save clean sheet against The Rock.

Ebro is the only goalkeeper to see time in the cage this season and she has earned every minute. The sophomore keeper made nine saves on Saturday after making 10 saves on Wednesday. She earned her first career clean sheet on Wednesday and wasted no time earning her second on Saturday.

The Kinver, UK native has made 32 saves this season and has earned a 0.77 goals against average and a .889 save percentage.

Coach's Corner

Head Coach Jon Arlet understands what this win means to the program, "I'm proud for everyone involved. Our players, staff, the alumni who have been waiting a long time for us to turn this result around." Arlet is also very excited to see what this team can keep doing after earning points in both games this week, "I believe in this side so much. It's exciting, and I get the sense this group is hungry."

Up Next

The Lakers are back on the pitch Wednesday at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field to host UPJ. Mercyhurst then hits the road on Saturday to play Seton Hill.
