NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the opening day of the Cavalier Invitational hosted by Walsh University.
The Lakers dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Notre Dame College in the opener before claiming a 3-1 victory over Davneport in match two.
In the opener the Lakers trailed 2-1, but rallied to win the fourth set 25-18. They jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fifth, but a see-saw battle saw the Falcons come out with a 15-13 victory.
Beth Brady paced the Laker offense with 13 kills.
Madison Kasper and
Hailey Wilson each tallied nine kills.
Chase Cole led the defensive effort with six blocks.
Hannah Vuylsteke and Brady each recorded 23 digs.
Alexa Mitchell dished out 21 assists.
In the second match, Mercyhurst claimed the opening set 27-25. The Panthers claimed the second set 25-16, but the Lakers swept through the third and fourth by scores of 25-19 and 25-23.
Kasper notched 19 kills to lead the offense. Brady and Wilson each scored nine kills.
Vuylsteke notched a game-high 36 digs. Mitchell added 24 assists.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday at noon when they take on host Walsh at the Cavalier Invitational.
