Erie, PA—Mercyhurst women's hockey has announced their schedule for the 2021-22 season. The schedule will consist of a full 16-game College Hockey America schedule along with 16 non-conference games.
With only five active members of the CHA, each team will play four games against each other with each team hosting a home series and going on the road for a two-game series.
The Lakers will play against RPI, Colgate, Franklin Pierce, Union, Cornell, Long Island, St. Lawrence along with heading to Nashville to play in the Smashville Collegiate Women's Hockey Showcase with Colgate, Boston College, and Minnesota.
Mercyhurst will face at least three teams who ended the 2020-21 season ranked or were receiving votes. Colgate ended their season ranked fifth in the nation, Penn State was ranked eighth, while St. Lawrence received votes to close out the season. It has not yet been determined who the Lakers will face in the Nashville Tournament, but Boston College was ranked seventh after a NCAA Tournament appearance while Minnesota was ranked sixth. Cornell did not play last season due to COVID-19 but when they last took the ice, the Big Red were ranked first in the nation.
After not starting their season until December last season, the Lakers will open their season on September 24th as RPI will come to Erie for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Mercyhurst will then go on the road for the first time to face Colgate on October 1st and 2nd.
CHA play will start on October 29th and 30th as the reigning CHA Regular Season Champion Penn State Nittany Lions will come to Erie for a two-game series. After a weekend off and a home series versus St. Lawrence, the Lakers will head up to Rochester for their first road CHA series against the RIT Tigers.
Regular season play will conclude on February 19th as the Lakers will make the trip to Lindenwood for two games against the Lions. CHA playoffs are set to begin on February 25th and will conclude on March 5th. The NCAA Frozen Four will start on March 18th with the National Championship closing out the season on March 20th at the Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pa.
Mercyhurst finished the shortened 2020-21 season 10-7-1 while falling in the second round of the CHA Playoffs to the eventual winner Robert Morris. Mercyhurst will return most of their roster from last season as they lost just four student-athletes to graduation while K.K. Thiessen and Alexa Vasko will be coming back for their fifth years.
