Men's Soccer Rolls Past Cross-Town Rival Gannon

Erie, PA--The Mercyhurst Men's soccer team remained unbeaten for the 2021 spring season as they defeated rival Gannon University at home on Saturday by a score of 4-1.

How it Happened
The scoring began in the 19th minute of the contest when Mercyhurst drew a penalty inside of the 18-yard box resulting in a red card being shown to the Golden Knights defender. Junior Sidney Warden stepped up to the spot and drained the penalty shot for the Lakers to put Mercyhurst up 1-0 early.

Warden was able to knock in his second goal of the contest right before the half in the 45th minute. Sophomore Brentyn Muir was credited with the assist for the Lakers.

Gannon was able to fight back into the contest after a goal shortly into the second half to make it 2-1 Mercyhurst, until the 65th minute when freshman Axel Aronsson was able to head in a corner kick to put the Lakers up 3-1.

As time wound down in the match, Mercyhurst was able to add its final goal of the contest off the foot of Junior Tom Barry in the 79th minute.

The Lakers were able to put up ten shots (eight on target) compared to just two for the rival Knights. Mercyhurst keeper Mattias Odelius did not see much action throughout the match however he was able to make one save for the Lakers.

The developmental teams played to a 4-4 draw following the 4-1 Mercyhurst victory to open the day.

The Lakers will travel to Rochester on Tuesday, April 6th as they look to keep their record unblemished against Roberts Wesleyan. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
