ERIE, Pa. – The third-ranked Mercyhurst men's lacrosse team had 18 different players find the back of the net, including five individuals, score their first of the season as the Lakers rebounded from their first loss of the season quite nicely by dominating Davis & Elkins College by a score of 30-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Saxon Stadium in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action. It was the first time since April 5, 1997, that the Lakers recorded 30 or more goals when they knocked off Saint Vincent 32-5 in Erie.
The visitors claimed the opening faceoff of the game, but a quick turnover resulted in the first of a dozen Lakers goals in the first as
Devin Pipher found
Braden McCard for the lead. The next two tallies came a minute later with
Nicholas Mabe scoring unassisted before Pipher notched his second helper by finding
Bryce Johnson. Johnson then became the helper when he hit
Quinn Simonson who stepped down the ally and beat David Thorne Jr. At the other end of the field
Cole Pellicano made just one save in his lone quarter of work at the 6:25 mark denying Sean Adams, which then resulted in Pipher setting up
Caleb Kueber for goals five and six. After Mabe buried his second of the day,
Benjamin Smith-Wilcox scored man-up followed by
Colin Schmatz netting his third of the campaign for the 9-0 lead. The Lakers were not done however as the "Pipher to Kueber" connection struck two more times pushing the margin to 11 and
Casey Scott made it 12-0 through 15 minutes.
Three minutes into quarter two Schmatz picked up point number two of the day hitting
Jared Butler extending the gap to 13-0. A turnover by the visitors off the ensuing faceoff led to long-pole
Mike Wtulich getting goal one of the season before
Timothy McMullen scored unassisted for the 15-0 advantage just over five minutes in. Butler notched his second and
Jacob Emerson tallied at the 10:21 mark pushing it out to 17-0. The Green and Blue buried the rock two more times in the half with Patrick Carrozi along with Scott beating Thorne Jr.
Jason Pawlak occupied the cage for the home side in the second and was tasked with making one save.
Davis & Elkins came out of the break energized and finally broke onto the scoreboard as Tyler Kolodka beat
Brett Olney low to cut it to 19-1 with 90-seconds gone. The Lakers responded quite swiftly by getting two more markers from Carrozzi to complete his hat trick thanks to faceoff wins by
Charles Greenlese and
Shawn Doran. Before five minutes had elapased in the period the hosts had two more goals on the board with
Stephen Katz picking up his first of the year and Simonson getting number two. Kueber made a rare appearance in the game on a man-up situation and setup Emerson, followed by another for Carrozzi making it 25-1.
Bo Columbus completed the scoring in the third with goal number one of his college career.
Shea Newell became the fourth Laker on the day to get his first goal of the season at the 7:10 mark. After serving a one-minute slashing penalty Nolan Morrison looked to make up for his mistake by sliding a shot by
Brendan Eyestone bringing the score to 27-2.
Joel Robare was the final member of the quintet of first-time scorers, while Doran and Schmatz also added a goal the remainder of the contest for the 30-2 final.
