Akron, OH—After playing their first home games in 657 days, the Mercyhurst baseball team went back on the road on Sunday to take on Division I Akron. The Zips were able to defeat the Lakers by a score of 12-1.
How it Happened
The Zips were able to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning and continued to add to it throughout the game.
Mercyhurst looked to mount a comeback in the seventh inning down 6-0. The Laker were able to get runners on second and third with just one out in the frame. Mercyhurst was able to push their lone run across after a Dominic Cecere groundout, Luke Jackson came into score while Matthew Gibson moved up to the third on the play.
Philip Ferranti and Tyler Zaluski were the only two Lakers to record a base hit while Jackson earned a walk, Gibson earned two walks, and Jack Elliott earned a hat trick of walks.
Six different Lakers toed the rubber today for the Lakers with Vincenzo Lucente throwing three innings to open the game and allowing just two runs on four hits. The pitching staff combined for seven strikeouts and stranded nine runners on base.
