Baseball Drops Weekend Opener to Salem

Erie, PA—The Mercyhurst baseball team played their eighth game of the season and third against Salem, the Tigers came out on top beating the Lakers 11-2.

How it Happened

The Lakers came out swinging as Troy Banks was able to hit his second homer of the season in the bottom of the first inning to put the Lakers up. Josh Surowiec was able to extend the lead to two as he reached on a fielder's choice and Jack Elliott came into score after the pitcher couldn't handle to throw at first.

Salem would score six in the top of the second and would have the lead the rest of the afternoon. The Tigers would add four more in the fourth and one more in the sixth.

Five different pitchers took the mound today Josh Greggs, Ryan Rapp, and Chad Cwik were each able to work scoreless innings. Greggs allowed no hits and had two strikeouts, Rapp was to work around double, forced two flyouts and used a slidestep delivery to help Jordan Zilka throw out an attempted base stealer, Cwik allowed no hits and struck out one in the top of the ninth.

Six Lakers recorded hits this afternoon, Banks, Surowiec, Tyler Zaluski, Zilka, Matthew Gibson, and Dominic Cecere each had one hit.

Up Next

Mercyhurst will be back in action tomorrow as they take on Salem in a doubleheader before facing D'Youville in a doubleheader on Sunday.
