BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Mercyhurst men's hockey team battled back from two goals down in the third period but fell 5-4 in overtime to host Canisius Tuesday night at the HarborCenter.
Down 4-2 in the third, Noah Kane ripped a shot far post on Matt Ladd on the power play at the 7:42 mark to trim the lead to 4-3.
After a Mercyhurst power play was cut short by a Joseph Maziarz penalty, Marko Reifenberger forced a turnover at the defensive blueline and was tripped on the ensuing breakaway earning a penalty shot with just 39.5 seconds remaining in the game. Reifenberger turned the puck back to the forehand on the penalty shot to tie the game.
The Golden Griffins carried the power play into overtime and Keaton Mastrodonato scored just 34 seconds into overtime to set the final.
Kane opened up the scoring for the Lakers just 1:06 into the contest. Canisius would strike twice in the first to take a 2-1 advantage into the first intermission.
Jonathan Bendorf tied the game 1:15 into the second period with a shot between the dots from Kane. Mastrodonato scored less than a minute later to give Canisius a 3-2 advantage. Matt Long made it 4-2 going into the second break.
Kane paced the Laker offense with three points on two goals and an assist. Hank Johnson made 31 saves taking the loss in net.
The Lakers are back in action on Friday when they host Niagara at 7 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
