Lock Haven, Pa.—The No. 3 Mercyhurst Men's Basketball team continued their tear as they won their second game of the weekend swing, 87-74 at Lock Haven Saturday night.
The win put Mercyhurst in the top half of the PSAC West division with a 2-0 conference record, tied with No. 7 Indiana (Pa.) and Pitt-Johnstown. Slippery Rock sits atop the division with a 3-0 conference record to start the season. The loss for Lock Haven left no undefeated teams in the East.
After Mercyhurst and Lock Haven exchanged three-pointers to start the game, Cameron Gross was fouled on a fast-break layup that he made, sinking the and-one to tie the game at 17:05. Nicholas Lang gave Mercyhurst their first lead with a three-pointer 40 seconds later, and the Lakers never looked back.
The Lakers used an aggressive ranged attack to grow their lead to double-digits with a three by MiyKah McIntosh at 12:38 that made it 19-8. They shot nearly 50 percent from the floor in the first half as they worked to preserve their lead, and went into intermission up 40-28.
Lock Haven tried to get some momentum going early coming out of the locker room and cut Mercyhurst's lead down to as little as five points at 17:20, but could not get closer as the Lakers did well to control possession.
Mercyhurst took 10 more shots from the floor than Lock Haven in the second half and made 44 percent of their shots to keep their distance. They also sank all 11 of their free-throw attempts in the second half and finished the day 16-for-16 in that category.
Mercyhurst 18 turnovers while giving the ball away just eight times in the game, with six Lakers picking up at least one steal and Nicholas Lang swiping the rock away five times.
Steve Cannady led Mercyhurst with 21 points, and Cameron Gross followed up Friday's 14 point effort with 19 points and 10 rebounds Saturday. McIntosh and Lang posted 12 points each as well.
