Women's Soccer Starts PSAC Playoffs Against Edinboro

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team hosts the first round of the PSAC playoffs on Tuesday as Edinboro will make the trip to Erie.

The Matchup

The Lakers and Fighting Scots split their season series as Edinboro took game one at Mercyhurst and Mercyhurst got their revenge on the road in double overtime.

Edinboro and Mercyhurst have played 26 times dating back to 1998. The Lakers took the series lead with their last win as they are 11-10-5 against the Fighting Scots.

In the first game this season Amata Valentini scored the lone Laker goal as they outshot the Fighting Scots 19-11.

Game two went the Lakers way as Emily Mijares opened the scoring in just the second minute. Amber Thomas scored the overtime winner in the 116th minute.

Great Day To Be A Laker

On Saturday, the Lakers clinched their first ever PSAC West Regular Season Championship with a 3-0 win over Cal. Mijares scored twice in the win while Lauren Casey netted her fifth of the season for the third Laker goal. Maddie Elbro needed just two saves to earn the clean sheet.

Mercyhurst closed out the regular season on a six-game winning streak and won 12 of their last 14 games after starting the season 1-2-1.

Can't Stop Her

Mijares has been one of the best goal scorers in the PSAC during the Lakers six game winning streak. She has tallied nine goals in those six games and finished the regular season with goals in all six games and nine of the final 10 games. She finished tied for the PSAC lead in goals with 13 and tied for 14th in the NCAA. She also finished second in the nation with seven game winning goals which led the PSAC.

Regional Rankings

The NCAA announced their latest regional rankings last Wednesday. The Lakers were tabbed in the seventh spot and were one of six PSAC team to be in the top nine. The winner of the PSAC Playoffs will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The selection show will be held on Monday Nov. 15.
