Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Basketball team looks to continue their strong start as they host Bryant & Stratton College Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in their last tune-up match before kicking off PSAC play Dec. 3.
The Matchup
The Lakers and Bobcats have never played each other.
PSAC Hospitality
Mercyhurst has opened their season with four straight wins, two each against teams from different conferences. At the Dave Russell Conference Challenge Nov. 12-13, the Lakers took down the two teams picked to win their respective divisions in the CIAA: Bowie State and Fayetteville State. On Thursday, Mercyhurst downed Daemen, who was picked to finish second in the ECC's preseason poll in the Lakers' home opener. They then went back on the road to defeat D'Youville, also out of the ECC, on Saturday.
Target Practice
With a 104-56 win against D'Youville Saturday, the Lakers have bumped their per-game average to 90.5 points. Their average scoring margin is now 31.8 points, good for fourth in the nation. Those numbers are due in large part to their shot consistency. The team is shooting 53.8 percent from the floor (tied for No.17 in the country with IUP) and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Highway Robbery
Mercyhurst recorded 22 steals in their win over D'Youville, the third-highest single-game mark this season by a Division II team. They are averaging 13 steals per game and turn the ball over an average of 11 times less than opponents per game, good for fourth and second in the nation, respectively.
Scouting the Bobcats
Bryant & Stratton – Rochester finished third in the inaugural Vaden Cup a season ago, winning four out of their final five games of the season. This year, they had a pair of players named to the 2021-22 Vaden Cup Preseason Second All-Conference Team in guards Marcus Zappia and Victor Caldwell.
