Women’s Hockey Skates Past St. Lawrence 3-2

The Mercyhurst University Women's Hockey team picked up their ninth win of the season on Friday evening as they defeated St. Lawrence University by a score of 3-2.

Jenna Silvonen started in net for the Lakers, she helped keep the Saints off the scoreboard in the first period by making 12 saves. Mercyhurst was unable to score in the first despite 12 shots on net.

The second period saw both teams put up tallys, St. Lawrence's Nara Elia struck first for the Saints eight minutes and 26 seconds into the second period of play. However, the Lakers responded six minutes courtesy of junior defensemen Jordan Mortlock, for Mortlock it was the blueliners  first career collegiate goal in 57 games.

The teams remained tied going into the second intermission, Sara Boucher gave Mercyhurst their first lead of the night when she put her fifth goal of the season in net 10 minutes into the final period. The Lakers would keep their lead into the final minutes.

St. Lawrence was awarded a power play late in the third period, with a pulled goalie the Saints held a six to four advantage on the ice, however the Lakers penalty kill prevailed and Kristy Pidgeon scored an insurance empty-net goal. The Saints scored with six seconds remaining in the contest to bring the final score to 3-2.

K.K Thiessen, Alexa Vasko, Sydney Pedersen, Chantal Ste-Croix, and Pidgeon all picked up assists in the contest. Silvon ended the game with 31 stops in net.

The Lakers will return to the MIC tomorrow at 2:05 p.m to conclude their non-conference series with the Saints.
