Men's Hockey Beats Holy Cross To Open Weekend Series

Worcester, Mass.—Mercyhurst Men's Hockey earned their second win of the season on Friday as they defeated Holy Cross by a score of 3-2.

How it Happened

Just 6:08 into the opening frame the Lakers scored their first shorthanded goal of the season. Steven Ipri got credit for his third goal of the season while Rylee St. Onge and Devon Daniels tallied assists.

After the first period the Lakers were up one despite being outshot 9-8.

At the 7:44 mark of the second period Owen Norton scored his first goal of the season while Dante Sheriff and Geoff Kitt notched their eighth and second assists of the year respectively.

After 40 minutes of play the Lakers were up 2-0 while Hank Johnson had 17 saves in the first two periods.

Holy Cross got on the board at the 8:55 mark and then tied the game at 16:09 mark of the third period.

Just a under a minute later Gueorgi Feduolov scored his first goal of the season to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. Marko Reifenberger and Jonathan Bendorf added assists on what would be the game winning goal.

Johnson made 13 saves in the final 20 minutes and 30 in the game to give the Lakers the win.

Battle of Special Teams

The two teams combined for 84 penalty minutes in the contest and a combined 19:02 of power play time. Neither team converted on the power play but the Lakers did score shorthanded to open the scoring. Mercyhurst was 0/7 with the man advantage and had 11 shots.

Holy Cross was 0/4 on power play and managed to get six shots to Johnson.

The Lakers are now 2-0-1 against Holy Cross this season after taking five of six points against the Crusaders earlier this season.

Up Next

Mercyhurst closes out the weekend road series tomorrow with Holy Cross before coming home to start a home and home series with Canisius next Friday.
