Women’s Volleyball Tops Edinboro in Five-Set Thriller

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst women's volleyball team rallied from behind in the fifth set to defeat visiting Edinboro 3-2 in a key PSAC West matchup Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers were behind 8-7 in the final set. Kate Hennessy and Hailey Wilson scored kills sandwiching a Fighting Scot error to build a 10-8 advantage. After the teams traded points an Edinboro error pushed the Mercyhurst lead to 12-9. Edinboro closed the gap to 13-12, but back-to-back kills from Madison Kasper pushed the Lakers to victory.

Mercyhurst jumped out 11-2 in the opening set and never looked back on the way to a 25-12 set win. Edinboro knotted the match with a 25-17 win in the second. The Lakers responded with a 25-20 victory and the Fighting Scots forced a fifth with a 25-15 set win.

Kasper finished with 14 kills to lead the Lakers. Two other Mercyhurst players reached double figures in kills with Hennessy notching 13 and Beth Brady adding 11.

Hannah Vuylsteke had another strong serving night posting eight aces to go with a team leading 23 digs. Adeline Benjamin paced the defense with five blocks.

The Lakers improved to 2-4 in the PSAC West and will return to action on Friday when they travel to Seton Hill for a 7 p.m. match with the Griffins.
