ERIE, Pa. -- In front of a raucous crowd inside the Mercyhurst Athletic Center, the Mercyhurst women's volleyball team swept Gannon 3-0 Friday night in PSAC West action.
In the opening set, Mercyhurst trailed 10-9 before scoring three straight points to grab a 12-10 advantage. The Lakers never gave back the lead and claimed a 25-19 set victory.
In the second, Gannon lead 10-9, but Hannah Vuylsteke served up seven consecutive points including three aces to push the Lakers to a 16-10 lead that they would carry to 25-15 victory.
Set three came down to the wire, but a Madison Kasper kill gave the Lakers a 25-24 advantage and a Gannon attack error sealed the match for the Lakers.
The Lakers had a strong service game recording 12 aces with six from Vuylsteke. Beth Brady paced the offense with 12 kills. Alexa Mitchell led Mercyhurst with 23 assists while Claire Kenny chipped in 16.
The Golden Knights are receiving votes and are currently just outside the AVCA Top-25. With the win the Lakers bring home the Diocese Trophy.
Mercyhurst is back in action on Saturday when they host Edinboro at 4:05 p.m. inside the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
