Erie, PA --- The Mercyhurst Women's Ice Hockey team was back on the ice at the Mercyhurst Ice Center on Friday evening for a non-conference game against Franklin Pierce University. The Lakers won 9-1 for their fourth win of the young season.
How It Happened
Mercyhurst jumped out to an early 1-0 lead courtesy of graduate student Alex Vasko. Vasko netted her second goal of the season just one minute into the first period. Vasko got her stick on a puck that was put on net by
Jordan Mortlock.
Kristy Pidgeon was given the secondary assist. Don't mind the caption on the tweet, the official score was later changed.
Chantal Ste-Croix was the next Lakers to put one in net. Ste-Croix converted on a rebound chance after a shot by
Vanessa Upson. Her goal gave Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead entering the second period of play.
Mercyhurst's
Emily Pinto tallied her second goal of her senior campaign at the 4:45 mark in the second period. Pinto was a part of a three on one break away that saw Upson take the puck up the right side of the ice and fire a pass to Pinto who fired it in the back of the net.
Kristy Pidgeon was credited with her third goal of the year as she tipped a wrist shot by Mortlock for a power-play goal. Upson earned herself a secondary assist.
Franklin Pierce scored their only goal of the night at the 17:14 mark in the second period. The goal cut the Mercyhurst lead to 4-1.
Almost a minute after the Ravens scored their goal,
Marielle Parks got her first goal of the night. The Erie native was led up the left side of the ice on a pass from K.K. Thiesenn, Parks finished the job, firing a wrister past the Franklin Pierce keeper to make the score 5-1.
Upson started the scoring off in the third period, she lasered in a stick-side wrist shot that made the score 6-1.
Sara Boucher was credited with an assist.
Pidgeon added her third point of the contest at the 12:43 mark in the third. Pidgeon put in a rebound shot that banked off the goalies pads and into the back of the net. Pidgeon's goal was assisted by Vasko and Aylssa Kawa, this was Kawa's first career collegiate point.
Upson scored again a couple minutes later to mark her fifth point of the game. Upson put in the rebound off a
Marielle Parks shot. Boucher along with Parks got assists.
Parks concluded the scoring for the evening at the 18:04 mark. She slapped a one-timer past the Raven's goalkeeper to make the game 9-1.
Alexandria Weiss and
Sydney Pedersen earned assists on that goal.
