Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team gets back on the pitch on Wednesday after picking up six points last week. The Lakers face Cal (PA) on Wednesday and Edinboro on Friday with both games on the road.
The Matchups
Cal (PA) and the Lakers have played each other 17 times dating back to 1996. The Vulcans have the series lead 10-7-1, Mercyhurst has won the last three matchups with Cal (PA) dating back to 2018.
The Fightin Scots and Lakers have matched up 25 times dating back to 1998. Mercyhurst and Edinboro both have 10 wins against each other while they have also tied five times. The Lakers and Fighting Scots played earlier this season and it was Edinboro who took the 2-1 win at Mercyhurst.
What's Poppin
The Lakers are coming off a week in which they took all six possible points with a 4-0 win over Clarion on Wednesday and a 3-1 win over IUP on Saturday.
In the 4-0 win over Clarion the Lakers were led by Lauren Casey who scored twice while Taryn Baxter and Amber Thomas each scored and had an assist. Maddie Elbro needed to make just one save to earn her fourth clean sheet of the season. The Lakers outshot the Golden Eagles 15-2 and 7-1 in shots on goal.
Against IUP the Lakers outshot the Crimson Hawks 25-7 and 10-4 in shots on goal while winning 3-1. Emily Mijares scored twice and freshman Teagan Mehalko scored the final Laker goal. Dani Hartman, Madison Hoover, and Karah Van Horn each picked up assists. Elbro made three saves in the win.
Things You Love To See
Mijares became the second the Laker to win a PSAC West weekly award, as she won the PSAC West Athlete of the Week after her performance this week. Elbro won the award on Sept. 20th for PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week.
Look at the Table
The Lakers sit in fourth place in the PSAC West as Slippery Rock leads the way with 18 points. They are followed by Edinboro (15), Gannon (14), and Mercyhurst with 13. Mercyhurst has nine conference games left including one matchup left against Edinboro, Gannon and Slippery Rock.
Scouting Cal (PA)
The Vulcans are coming into the week with a record of 1-7 with their lone win coming against Seton Hill this past weekend. Juliana Cruz leads the Vulcans with three goals, Lindsie Galbreath is second on the team in points with six as she has two goals and two assists. Emily Ouimet has started every game in the cage and has made 59 saves, she has a save percentage of .756.
Scouting Edinboro
The Fighting Scots are 6-2 this season with their lone losses coming to Gannon on Sept. 25 and Slippery Rock on Sept. 29. Morgan Wissner leads the team in goals and points with four goals and eight assists. Brittnie Spithaler is right behind her with three goals and seven points. Anna Voelker has made 36 saves in the cage and is coming off a week in which she was named PSAC Defensive Player of the Week.
