Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Cameron Anzevino, Athletic Communications Coordinator

Women’s Hockey Falls 3-0 to Penn State

The Mercyhurst University Women's Ice Hockey team was defeated by Penn State on Saturday afternoon in what was the second contest of a two-game series at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.

The first period was very similar to the first period from yesterday's contest as neither team found the back of the net. Ena Nystrøm started in goal for Mercyhurst for the first time this year in back-to-back games. She stopped all 10 of the Nittany Lions first period shots on net. The Laker penalty kill was not called on that often today as Mercyhurst only drew one penalty in the contest, that penalty came in the first period at the 14:58 mark as Jordan Mortlock was called for interference. Nystrøm and the penalty kill unit were able to fight off the lone Penn State power play with ease.

Julie Gough gave Penn State their first lead of the weekend when she put her second puck in net of the series 9:50 into the second period of play. The Nittany Lions scored their second goal of the game just five minutes later as Lexi Bedier fired a shot on goal past Nystrøm to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Lakers had a power play opportunity in the third period however they were unable to capitalize on the man-up advantage. Penn State added an empty net goal with just seconds remaining as they went on to take the victory 3-0.

Nystrøm ended the contest with 34 saves on 36 shots. Sydney Pedersen led Mercyhurst in shots with three.

The Women will take next weekend off however they will return to the Mercyhurst Ice Center the following weekend to host St. Lawrence University for two games.
