Volleyball Set for Two Away Matches this Week, Vuylsteke Within Reach of Career Digs Record

Erie, PA --- The Mercyhurst University Volleyball team will hit the road this week as they look to extend their current six game winning streak. They first travel to IUP on Friday with game time slated for 7:00 p.m,  then they will make the trip to Clarion University to battle it out with the Golden Eagles at 1:00 p.m on Saturday.

The Games

This will be the second time this season that Mercyhurst and IUP will match up against one another. IUP got the best of the Lakers earlier in the year as they won a five-set thriller, back on October 2nd at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center by a score of 23-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-14, 15-11.

Mercyhurst has also played the Golden Eagles of Clarion once already this year. Clarion swept the Lakers in straight sets during that contest, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17.

From Last Week

Last week, the Lakers pushed their winning streak to six games as they were victorious against Slippery Rock and Pitt-Johnstown. In Tuesday's match with Slippery Rock, Hailey Wilson was one of three Lakers with double-digit kills as she led with 15. Beth Brady turned in 14 kills while Madison Kaper chipped in 13. Hannah Vuylsteke backed up her PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week selection with a team-high 26 digs to go with eight assists.

In Saturday's contest against UPJ, The Lakers dropped the first set 25-21 before winning three straight 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 to earn the win. Brady paced the team with 16 kills and Kasper along with Chase Cole each recorded three blocks.

Record Watch

Redshirt Senior Hannah Vuylsteke is inching closer to the Mercyhurst all-time career digs record. Vuylsteke needs just 14 digs to tie and 15 to break the record that was set back in 2010 by Kendall Ashworth. She will aim to claim the digs record in Friday's match vs IUP.

Scouting IUP

The Crimson Hawks currently hold a 3-7 PSAC conference record and sit in 7th position in the PSAC West standings; they will enter Friday's game after falling in straight sets to Gannon last Friday.

Scouting Clarion

The Golden Eagles are currently sitting right above Mercyhurst in the third spot of the PSAC West standings. Before Saturday's contest, Clarion will host Gannon University at home on Friday evening. Most recently, Clarion was swept in straight sets by Edinboro last Friday evening.
