Women's Soccer Downs Seton Hill as Mijares Nets a Hat-Trick

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team earned their 10th win of the season Wednesday evening as they defeated Seton Hill 4-0 at home.

How it Happened

Just 41 seconds into the game (yes 41 seconds) the Lakers took the lead. Karah Van Horn scored her fourth of the year as Emily Mijares picked up the assist on the play.

In the 16th minute the two combined for the second Laker goal. This time it was Mijares who scored her eighth goal of the season and her seventh goal in her last seven games.

The Lakers went into the half outshooting Seton Hill 7-1. Maddie Elbro made the lone save for the Lakers while Mercyhurst generated four shots on goal.

Mercyhurst extended their lead to three in the 52nd minute as Mijares netted her second goal of the game. This time it was Amber Thomas who added an assist.

Mijares wasn't don't yet. She scored her third goal in the 55th minute to give the Lakers the four-goal lead. Teagan Mehalko earned her second assist of the season on the goal.

The Lakers allowed just one shot today which is the least amount of shots allowed since they allowed zero shots against Clarion on Sept. 14, 2011.

Number 10 for Number 10

Mijares now has 10 goals this season which leads the Lakers. She has 47 shots with 29 finding the goal. Today's hat-trick is the first Laker hat-trick since Alyssa Otto scored one on Nov. 6, 2019 against IUP.

Playoffs Are Here (Well Almost)

The Lakers have three PSAC West games remaining before the playoffs begin. Mercyhurst sits in third place in the PSAC West with 28 points. They are just one point behind Gannon for second and three points behind Slippery Rock for the top spot. Edinboro and IUP are chasing the Lakers with 21 and 19 points respectively.

Beth, Karah. How was it out there?

Coach's Corner

Head Coach Jon Arlet is excited about his team and where they are at. "This is a game we were looking forward to in a big way. I'm proud of our approach to the match." Arlet knows it's the little things that go a long way and he is proud of the production all throughout the lineup. "Our quality in the 18 yard box on attack was there and we were incredibly organized defensively for a vast majority of the match. Another clean sheet for Elbro and the defense. A Mijares hat-trick. Karah on the score sheet early...the intent was there through the team and we look forward to another test this weekend away at Clarion."

Up Next

The Lakers take on Clarion and IUP on the road on Saturday and Wednesday before closing out the regular season next Saturday at home against Cal (PA).
