Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team earned their fourth PSAC West win with a 3-1 win over IUP.
How it Happened
In the 32nd minute the Lakers took the lead thanks to Emily Mijares. Dani Hartman played a through ball between two IUP defenders and Mijares beat the keeper to the ball and put it past her to make it 1-0 Lakers.
After 45 minutes the Lakers and Crimson Hawks went into halftime. Mercyhurst led IUP in shots 14-3 while the Lakers also earned three corner kicks and held IUP to no corners.
In the 48th minute IUP scored, and the game was all square with 42 minutes remaining in regulation.
11 minutes later in the 59th minute the Lakers took their lead back. Madison Hoover played a corner kick into the box and after a couple changes in direction Mijares was officially credited (don't mind the tweet) with her second goal of the game and third of the season.
Instead of parking the bus, the Lakers kept attacking and looked to extend their lead. In the 85th minute the Lakers increased the lead to two and put the game out of reach for IUP. Teagan Melhalko played a little game of give and go with fellow freshman Karah Van Horn and beat the keeper for her first goal of year.
Mercyhurst outshot the Crimson Hawks 25-7 and 10-4 in shots on goal. The Lakers also did not allow a corner all game and earned nine themselves.
Goalkeeper Maddie Elbro made three saves as she picked up her fifth win of the season.
