The Mercyhurst University Women's Ice Hockey team played game number two of their weekend series with #4 Colgate on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers fell by a score of 4-2.
How it Happened
In the first period, Colgate was flagged for a tripping penalty just four minutes into the game. This allowed for an early Mercyhurst powerplay that the Lakers did not fail to capitalize on.
Jersey Phillips scored the powerplay goal for Mercyhurst giving the Lakers a 1-0 lead, it was the sophomore forward's first career collegiate goal.
Grace Nelles and
Liliane Perreault were credited with assists.
The Raiders lit the bell for the first time in the game as they scored two seconds into a powerplay at the 13:57 mark in the first. This tied the contest at 1-1.
Mercyhurst was awarded an additional powerplay later in the period, however they failed to capitalize on the opportunity.
During the second period, Mercyhurst ripped eight shots at the Raiders goaltender but none of them found the target. For Colgate, Dara Greig gave the Raiders their first lead of the game with 5:35 remaining on the second period clock. Greig's goal was the lone score for either team in the period.
Colgate began the scoring in the third period when Danielle Serdachny scored 11 minutes into the period to give the Raiders a 3-1 lead.
Kristy Pidgeon then tacked on the second Mercyhurst goal of the game as well as her second career goal as a Laker. Perreault assisted again as did sophomore
Sara Boucher.
Mercyhurst battled hard during the remaining minutes however their comeback bid came up just short as Colgate would go on to add an empty net goal late bringing the final score to 4-2.
Jenna Silvonen made the start for the Lakers in net, Silvonen stopped 24 of the 27 shots she faced. Colgate outshot Mercyhurst 28-25.
Next Up
The Lakers will be back in the Mercyhurst Ice Center next weekend to host Franklin Pierce University. The first game of the two-game series is scheduled to start at 7:05 p.m on Friday.
