SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- After dropping the first two sets, the Mercyhurst women's volleyball team roared back to win three straight and earn a 3-2 victory over host Slippery Rock to win their fifth straight PSAC West match.
The Rock took the first set 25-15 and built a 21-16 in the second. The Lakers started to build momentum with an 8-3 run to knot the second at 24-24. Slippery Rock won the next two points to take the second 26-24.
In the third, the Lakers fell behind 10-9 and traded points with the Rock to a score of 12-12. Mercyhurst took control of the third finishing on a 13-4 run to extend the match to a fourth set.
Mercyhurst jumped out 5-1 in the fourth set. Slippery Rock would score the next two points, but that was as close as they would get in the set with the Lakers taking the fourth 25-15.
In the decisive fifth set, Mercyhurst got out to a 6-2 lead forcing a Slippery Rock timeout. The Rock scored the next point, but the Lakers went on a 5-2 run to extend the lead to 11-5. A kill each from Maggie Thomas and Hailey Wilson and pair from Beth Brady lifted Mercyhurst to a 15-9 win in the set and the match.
Wilson led three Lakers with double-digit kills putting down 15. Brady turned in 14 kills while Madison Kasper chipped in 13.
Hannah Vuylsteke backed up her PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week selection with a team-high 26 kills to go with eight assists and a service ace. Thomas added five block assists to her six kills and Kate Hennessy notched four block assists and three kills.
Alexa Mitchell dished out 24 assists while Isa McCaffery added 17 helpers and a pair of kills.
The Lakers are back in action on Saturday when they host Pitt Johnstown at 4:05 inside the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
