ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst volleyball team ran their win streak to six games with a 3-1 victory over Pitt-Johnstown Saturday evening.
The Lakers dropped the first set 25-21 before winning three straight 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 to earn the win.
UPJ held a 17-15 advantage in the second but a Madison Kasper kill and two Mountain Cat errors gave the Lakers an 18-17 advantage. The score teetered back and forth to a 21-21 tie. Kate Hennessy recorded a kill and a UPJ error made it 23-21 Mercyhurst. After a Mountain Cat kill, Maggie Thomas and Beth Brady recorded kills to close out the set.
In the third, UPJ build an 18-15 advantage but the Lakers roared back again scoring nine straight points keyed by three service aces from Alexa Mitchell to take a 24-18 lead and eventually win the set 25-20.
With the fourth set tied 22-22, Hennessy and Brady recorded back-to-back kills to push Mercyhurst to a 24-22 lead. The Mountain Cats got one back on a Lauren Gechter kill, but Hailey Wilson closed out the match with a kill of her own for the Lakers.
Brady paced the offense for the Lakers with 16 kills while Kasper chipped in 12. Kasper and Chase Cole each recorded three blocks.
The Lakers served well recording 11 aces led by three each from Hannah Vuylsteke and Mitchell. Vuylsteke also tallied a game-high 31 digs. Claire Kenny posted a team-high 26 assists while Mitchell added 20.
The Lakers on back in action on Friday when they travel to IUP. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
