The Mercyhurst Field Hockey team took the turf at Saxon Stadium on Tuesday evening in a game that was played under the lights against Slippery Rock. The Lakers battled hard, however The Rock came away with the 5-1 victory.
Slippery Rock began their scoring at the 7:44 mark in the first quarter when Samantha Karmonick rifled in the first goal of the game to put The Rock up 1-0. Mercyhurst responded quickly as Allyson Doran made the scoreboard all even 11:47 into the first. It was the first collegiate goal for the freshman Doran. Kayla Gill was credited with an assist on the play.
As the second quarter began, both defenses started to ramp up the pressure as neither team scored during the quarter.
Kayla Desormeau made two saves for Mercyhurst to help keep Slippery Rock off the scoreboard. The teams went into the halftime break still tied at one.
In the third, Slippery Rock began to pull away as they scored twice in the quarter. Both of the goals came off rebound opportunities that The Rock converted on to give them a 3-1 lead going into the final quarter.
Slippery Rock tacked on two more goals in the fourth quarter, their final score came courtesy of Jessie Trube at the 55:20 mark.
Up next, the Lakers will travel to Kutztown on Saturday to match up with the Golden Bears, the game is slated for a 12:00 p.m start time.
