The Mercyhurst University Women's Ice Hockey team skated to their sixth win of the season Friday afternoon as they defeated Union College by a score of 5-0.
In the first period, Mercyhurst placed eight shots on goal compared to 13 for Union, however neither team could find the back of the net. The Lakers defense, led by Goaltender Ena Nystrom, killed off the single power play that the Dutchmen were given during the first. Nystrom got credited with 13 saves during the period.
Mercyhurst struck first in the second period and did not look back after. The first goal of the game was scored by the current College Hockey America points leader,
Vanessa Upson. Sophomore
Sara Boucher was credited with the assist.Â
Boucher earned her second point of the game just three minutes after the Upson goal as she scored unassisted to give Mercyhurst a 2-0 lead at the 13:15 mark in the second period. This was Boucher's second goal of the season.
With 3 minutes remaining until the second intermission,
Alexa Vasko fired in her third goal of the young season. Vasko's goal was assisted by
Liliane Perreault.
The Lakers closed out the second period up 3-0 on the Dutchmen, they would strike two more times in the third period.
The fourth Mercyhurst goal was identical to their third. Vasko found the back of the net for the second time in the contest, that goal was again assisted by Perreault who now sits atop the team rankings in assists with seven.
Upson started the scoring in this one and she finished it off as well. The rookie sensation took a pass from Boucher and ripped in home for her seventh goal in just eight games played.
Kristy Pidgeon was also credited with an assist on Upson's second goal.
Ena Nystrom flourished in this game. The Junior Goalkeeper blocked all 30 shots she saw on goal en route to her first career collegiate shutout. For Nystrom it was her third win in goal this season, the 30 saves were the most for a Mercyhurst Goalkeeper this year.
The Lakers will close out their series with the Dutchmen tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
