Women's Hockey Ties with Union 2-2

The Mercyhurst University Women's Ice Hockey team played to a draw on Saturday afternoon with Union College.

After not scoring a goal during yesterday's contest, the Dutchmen came out of the gates ready to compete. Maddie Suitor started the scoring for today's game, the Union forward scored two minutes into the contest to give the Dutchmen their first lead of the weekend.

Graduate Student Alexa Vasko responded for Mercyhurst. The third-year captain evened the score as she placed the puck in net at the 11:41 mark in the first period. Liliane Perreault and Kristy Pidgeon earned assists on Vasko's goal.

The teams continued on to the second period still tied at 1-1. As play continued on, neither team gained any leverage as both goalkeepers acted as walls in front of the net. Jenna Silvonen made her fifth start of the season in net for the Lakers. The Junior stopped all 13 shots she faced in the second quarter.

The Lakers took the lead back in the beginning of the third period courtesy of sophomore forward Chantal Ste-Croix. The goal was Ste-Croix's second of the year, Emily Pinto and Alexandria Weiss were credited with assists on the play.

Unfortunately for Mercyhurst, Union tied the game at 2-2 when Celeste Beaudoin scored for the Dutchmen. The teams would go on to play the remainder of the third period scoreless and enter overtime.

In the five minutes 3v3 overtime period, the Lakers fired three shots on goal but none went in. Silvonen remained solid in net as she saved two shots in the period.

Up next, Mercyhurst will head home this week and regroup, they will then make the trip to Ithaca New York next Friday for a two-game series against Cornell.
