University Park, PA—The Lakers headed to State College for their first away series of the season. The Lakers fell Saturday night 2-1 to the Penn State Nittany Lions who are currently ranked ninth in the nation.
How it Happened
Mercyhurst started sophomore goalie Ena Nystrøm for the second time this season. The Laker netminder was able to turn away 32 of the 34 shots the Nittany Lions threw at her.
In the first period neither team could put one past the goal line. Penn State outshot the Lakers 12-8 in the first period.
After two periods of play nothing had been solved, Mercyhurst was able to outshoot the Nittany Lions 13-11 in the second while also winning 12 faceoffs compared to just four for Penn State.
Just 2:41 into the third period the Nittany Lions were finally able to solve Nystrøm as she only allowed her second goal of the season.
With a Laker in the box Penn State was able to extend their lead to two with just over 13 minutes to play, as the Lakers gave up just their second powerplay goal of the season.
With 5:07 left to play in regulation, Mercyhurst was able to cut the lead in half as senior Rachel Marmen went coast-coast and netted her first goal of the season.
The comeback came up short as the Lakers fell to Penn State after outshooting them in the third period 12-11 and winning 13 faceoffs compared to just 10 for Penn State.
Battle on Special Teams
The Lakers came into the game killing 95.7% of their penalites, however for only the second time this season Mercyhurst gave up a powerplay goal. The Lakers ended the night 1-2 on the powerplay with the one being the game winning goal. On the other side, the Lakers were not able to convert any of their five powerplay attempts.
