Nystrøm Stops 22 in Relief as the Lakers fall 4-1 to No. 9 Penn State

University Park, PA— For the second straight day, the Lakers were unable to recover from a two-goal hole as they fell to the Penn State Nittany Lions 4-1.

How it Happened

Penn State was able to jump out to another two-goal lead just 6:25 into the game.

With 8:55 remaining in the first period, the Lakers were able to cut the lead in half as Chantal Ste-Croix was able to find the rebound off a Summer-Rae Dobson shot. Ste-Croix made no mistake as she was able to score her second goal of the season.

With just over a minute and a half left in the first period, the Nittany Lions were able to recapture their two-goal lead as a puck deflected off Rachel Marmen past Jenna Silvonen to make it 3-1 at the end of the first period.

Going into the second period, the Lakers made a change in net with Ena Nystrøm taking over for Silvonen who made eight saves in the first period.

With 4:00 minutes remaining in the period, Nystrøm was able to make her biggest save of the afternoon and she was able to rob the Nittany Lions with her left pad to keep the game at 3-1 Nittany Lions.

The Lakers were able to outshoot Penn State in the second period 18-15 but were still down 3-1 heading into the third period.

Just two minutes into the third Nystrøm was able to shut down a Penn State two on one as she slid right to left to keep the deficit at two.

With 2:20 remaining in regulation Penn State was able to extend their lead to three as the puck snuck through Nystrøm and Penn State was able to tap in the rebound.

The Lakers were unable to recover from the two-goal lead as Nystrøm was able to stop 22 of 23 shots in relief.

Battle on Special Teams

Mercyhurst was able to kill off all three Penn State powerplays. The Lakers were unable to convert on any of their four powerplays but were able to generate four shots on the powerplay.
