Football Hosts Shepherd on Saturday

ERIE, Pa. -- The Mercyhurst football team hosts Shepherd University on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Saxon Stadium.

Seven Notes for Saturday:

Chasing History: Fifth-year senior quarterback Doug Altavilla is closing in on becoming the Lakers all-time leading passer. He currently stands at 6,523 yards and with just two more passing yards he will surpass Matt Kissell as the record holder. He also needs 550 yards of total offense to overtake Kissell in that category as well.

Toting the Rock: Redshirt junior Garrett Owens went for 117 yards and two touchdowns in last weeks win over Lake Erie. It was the seventh 100-yard performance of his career. In those seven games the Lakers hold a 6-1 record.

New Look, New Name: The former Tullio Field, got not only a new field turf playing surface, but also a new name, Saxon Stadium. Saxon Stadium is home not only to the Laker football team, but also field hockey, lacrosse and will host select soccer games. 

Playing Behind the Line: The Mercyhurst defense played in the Lake Erie backfield recording eight tackles for loss including four sacks. Jehrod Gregory and Joseph Scro each recorded a pair of TFL.

Turnover Battle: In the opener the Lakers won the turnover battle recording two fumble recoveries and an interception. Mercyhurst converted those turnovers into seven points.

Spreading the Ball: Five different Lakers carried the ball and six Lakers. Garrett Owens led the Lakers with 32 touches (30 carries, two receptoins. Austin Hence finished as the leading receiver with four catches for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Scouting the Rams: Shepherd comes off a season opening 24-21 loss to Ohio Dominican last Saturday. The Rams threw 43 times against the Panthers for 358 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Ty Hebron and Deonte Glover split carries and recorded 99 of Shepherd's 101 rushing yards. Chrys Lane led the team with 11 takcles, 10 solo and one tackle for loss. This is the inaugural season for the Rams as a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
