Mercyhurst Baseball Wins Two Tight Games at IUP

INDIANA, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Baseball team comes out on top after two pitching duels at Indiana (Pa.). The Lakers will look to take the weekend series as Mercyhurst host IUP tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM

Game One (W, 3-0):
Christian Young was on the hill for the Lakers in game one and was dominant from the start.  Young earned his fourth victory on the year remaining undefeated. The 6'6 Senior from Hamburg, NY, went six innings, only allowing four hits and recorded eight strikeouts and earning the shutout. Young was able to record at least one strikeout per inning with two strikeouts coming in the 3rd and 5th inning.

On the offensive side, Jack Elliot led the team with 2 RBI with Domenic DeRenzo earning the other RBI.  Alex O'Donnell, Dominic Cecere and Josh Surowiec also had one hit each in the victory.

The game remained scoreless until the Lakers' own, Elliott doubled to right field scoring DeRenzo and Surowiec to take a 2-0 lead.  IUP was able to keep MU off the board until the 7th when DeRenzo singled to left field scoring Cecere. Young was able to keep the Crimson Hawks off the board with Lucas Folmar who came in to relieve Young in the 7th, striking out two of the three batters he faced getting the save.

Losing pitcher was IUP's own Colin Claus (1-5) who went 6.2 innings, allowed four hits and three earned runs.

Game Two (W, 3-2):
Matthew Minnick earned the win in a tight contest over the Crimson Hawks.  This was Minnicks third win on the year (3-1) going six innings, allowing four hits, only one earned run and tallying seven strikeouts.

Adam Jeannette came in for relief of Minnick and earned his third save on the year and recorded two strikeouts.

Matthew Gibson and Zach Mitchell led the Lakers with two hits each. Both Gibson and Mitchell both had an RBI with Domenic DeRenzo tallying one as well.

IUP jumped on the board in the first after a Cestra single.  Gibson responded for the Lakers with a homer to tie the game back up at one all. Mercyhurst would then take a 3-1 lead in the fourth after a Mitchell single to left center scoring Gibson.

DeRenzo would then double trading places with Mitchell as he would cross home plate.  The Crimson Hawks would respond in the fifth scoring one run of their own but could not tally anymore giving Mercyhurst (16-4, 8-2) its second win of the day.

For IUP (7-18, 1-9) Jeff Allen would get the loss after six innings, giving up eight hits, three earned runs and seven strikeouts.
