Lakers Split Doubleheader on Monday and Take Weekend Series Over Cal 3-1.

ERIE, Pa.—Mercyhurst baseball splits doubleheader against California (Pa.) on Monday to take the conference series 3-1.

Game one (L, 10-4):

The Lakers struggled offensively to get the bats going in game one only producing two hits.  Matthew Schneider and Dom Cecere had the lone hits for MU and each had an RBI.  Kenny Robinson tallied the other RBI for Mercyhurst.

Schneider earned his RBI in the bottom of the first when he singled into left field scoring DeRenzo to give MU an early 1-0 lead. California responded with a Maudie single through the left side scoring Fogle.

The game would remain knotted up at one until the fifth when the Vulcans scored on a passed ball and a single to left to take the lead 3-1.  Cal U would then score another in the sixth inning making it 4-1.

In the bottom half the Lakers would tack on two more to only cut the deficit to one before California would have a big seventh inning and would pull away with this one winning 10-4.

For California, Eritz earned the victory pitching 5.1 innings, only allowing one hit, two earned runs and recorded six strikeouts.

Tyler Garbee was the losing pitching going five innings, allowing three hits and had six strikeouts.

Game Two (W, 4-1)

The bats woke up for the Lakers in game two with three players having two hits each in the game.  Hunter Snyder had two hits with also a solo homerun while Domenic DeRenzo also had a two-run blast, leading the team with two RBI.

Alex O'Donnell and Matthew Gibson tallied two hits each, respectively.

In the first, California (18-7, 5-3) jumped on the board first but then would not cross home plate the rest of the game as Russell Lamovec dialed in.
Mercyhurst (14-4, 6-2) would get on the board in the home half of the fourth of the Snyder homerun knotting the game up at one all.
California would look to answer but  Lamovec shut them down striking out two of the four batters faced to close the inning.

In the fifth, DeRenzo would back Lamovec up with a two-run homer to give MU a 3-1 lead.  In the sixth, O'Donnell would spark the inning with a double to right field and eventually gave Mercyhurst some insurance, scoring on a past ball.

To close, Lucas Folmar entered the game and would strikeout the two of the final three batters of the inning, making the last fly out to center and earn the save. Lakers take game two, 4-1.

Russell Lamovec Earned the win for the Lakers, recording ten strikeouts, only one earned run, allowing four hits.

Next Up: The Lakers will host Indiana (Pa.) on Friday in another doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM
