ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team fell 6-5 to Syracuse during College Hockey America play on Friday at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
Emma Nuutinen recorded two goals and one assist,
Megan Korzack scored two goals and
Sam Isbell had one goal and one assist.
Maggie Knott,
Michele Robillard,
Sarah Nelles,
Vilma Tanskanen,
Summer-Rae Dobson and
K.K. Thiessen picked up single assists for Mercyhurst (12-11-3, 9-4-0).
Brooke Avery, Abby Moloughney, Brooke Avery, Jessica DiGirolames, Alllie Olnowich and Anonda Hoppner scored for Syracuse (7-18-2, 7-5-1).
Six minutes into the first period, Syracuse got on the board first with a goal from Abby Moloughney.
Three minutes and forty seconds later Nuutinen scored her first goal of the game and tied it at 1-1. Knott had the lone assist.
Thirteen seconds into the second period, Isbell gave Mercyhurst a 2-1 lead on the power play. Nuutinen tallied an assist.
A little over two minutes later, Syracuse came back with Avery's first goal of the game.
Mercyhurst then took a 3-2 lead when Korzack scored her first goal of the night assisted by Robillard and Nelles.
Syracuse went on to scored three goals to take a 5-3 lead into the second intermission. DiGirolamo, Olnowich and Hoppner scored the goals.
At 12:19 of the third period, on the power play, Nuutinen recorded her second goal of the night to bring the Lakers back within one. Tanskanen and Isbell had assists.
Korzack then tied the game at 5-5 with less than five minutes remaining in the third period. Dobson and Thiessen had helpers.
With 43 seconds left in the third period, Avery scored her second goal of the night to give Syracuse a 6-5 win.
The Lakers went 2-for-6 on the power play while the Orange finished 1-for-5.
Sarah McDonnell made six saves in net, before
Kennedy Blair stopped eight shots in a relief effort. Maddi Welch stopped 22 shots on net for Syracuse.
