Lakers Drop Rematch to Gannon

ERIE, Pa. - After a 3-0 win at Saxon Stadium on September 18th, the Mercyhurst women's soccer team was defeated by city rival Gannon University 3-1 in the rematch on Saturday night at McConnell Family Stadium.

Gannon recorded the first shot of the game 3:20 into the match as Emma Manczka missed wide right.  The Lady Knights put some more pressure on the Mercyhurst defense in the 14th minute when Maddie North missed to the left and Sarah Fails had her offering blocked by the defense.  It would take until the 19th-minute before the Lakers posted a shot with Amber Thomas missing over the goal.  Visiting keeper Vilde Wold made her first save of the game at the 20:49 mark denying Emily Cekella.  Mercyhurst would not get a shot the rest of the half as the match would head to the break 0-0.

The home team was on the scoresheet just 42-seconds into the frame as Megan McCartney took a corner kick that found the head of Leah Bermudez who nodded it beyond Wold for the 1-0 lead.  The Knights added another goal eight-minutes later when Vanessa Coccurello found Fails in open space and she slotted her shot into the low corner to make it 2-0.  Mercyhurst first shot of the half came off the boot of Emilie Bock in the 62nd-minute, but she missed high.  Gannon stretched the edge to 3-0 at 80:11 when North hit Coccurello on the right side of box and her shot went under the crossbar for the goal.  Kennedy Solymosi had not been tasked to make a save all night and finally had her chance in the 86th-minute.  However, she came out of the net misplayed the ball which bounced out to Maya Bauer who ended the cleansheet and the scoring to make it 3-1.

Gannon outshot Mercyhurst 16-4 for the game and 6-1 on goal.  They also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Mercyhurst returns to action on Wednesday, October 23rd when they visit Slippery Rock to battle The Rock at 4pm.
