Women's Basketball Surges Past The Rock For Fifth Straight Victory

ERIE, Pa. -- Amber Renz powered the Mercyhurst offense with 29 points as the Laker women's basketball team defeated Slippery Rock, 80-56, in a PSAC contest on Saturday at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center. With the victory, MU stretched its winning streak to five games.

Nicolete Newman added 13 points to the Mercyhurst effort while Kori Sidwell grabbed eight rebounds and Emily Shopene dished 11 assists. Renz and Lauren Lapertosa had seven boards apiece.

Brooke Hinderliter led SRU (6-6, 4-2) with 19 points and seven rebounds. Morgan Henderson added 10 boards.

Slippery Rock held an 18-15 lead after one quarter before the Lakers pushed past their visitors during the second period.

MU went ahead with a 13-3 stretch, getting six points from Eliza Oswalt and four by Jenna Kunst in the process, to take the lead for good.

The Lakers held a 34-29 halftime lead before outscoring The Rock, 25-8, in the third quarter. That surge included a 12-point Mercyhurst run; 11 of those points were provided by Renz. MU led comfortably the rest of the way.

Mercyhurst was strong from the field, shooting 45.9 percent while holding SRU to 27.1.

With five consecutive wins, the Lakers have their longest streak since an eight-game run in 2016-17.

The Lakers (6-7, 3-3) will return to action on Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. PSAC home contest against Indiana (Pa.). Click HERE to purchase tickets.
