Men's Ice Hockey Drops 5-4 Decision to Holy Cross

ERIE, Pa. – The Mercyhurst men's ice hockey team fell 5-4 to Holy Cross on Saturday to split the weekend series at the Mercyhurst Ice Center.
 
Taylor Best recorded a goal and an assist while Joseph Duszak, Derek Barach and Joshua Lammon scored the Lakers other goals. Steven Ipri, Ethan Johnson, Jeremy Wu, Brendan Riley, James Anderson, Matthew Whittaker and Owen Norton tallied single assists for Mercyhurst (9-11-2, 7-6-1).
 
Spencer Trapp, Johnny Coughlin, Peter Crinella, Neil Robinson and Kevin Darrar scored for Holy Cross (3-12-2, 3-8-1).
 
One minute and twenty-eight seconds into the game, Best scored with assists from Ipri and Johnson.
 
One minute and four seconds later, Duszak found the back of the net to give Mercyhurst an early 2-0 lead. Wu and Riley were credited with assists.
 
Under two minute later, Holy Cross got on the board with a goal from Trapp before Coughlin tied the game at 2-2, on the power play, late in the first period.
 
Early in the second period, the Crusaders took a 4-2 lead with two goals during a five minute-major power play. Crinella and Robinson picked up the go-head goals.
 
Mercyhurst came back to tie it at 4-4 with two goals from Barach and Lammon. Anderson, Whittaker, Norton and Best added assists.
 
Halfway through the third period, Darrar scored for Holy Cross to eventually end the game 5-4 Holy Cross.
 
Garrett Metcalf made 20 saves in net for Mercyhurst while Erik Gordon stopped 27 shots for Holy Cross.
 
The Lakers went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Crusaders finished 3-for-5.
 
Mercyhurst is back in action on Jan. 11-12 for a home-and-home series with Canisius. The Lakers will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for a 7:35 p.m. game on Friday before hosting the Golden Griffins at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets to Saturday's game can be purchased online HERE.
